When to Schedule Your Ultrasound
As soon as you know you are pregnant after taking a pregnancy test, you can schedule an ultrasound. Most women choose to schedule their ultrasound as early as 6 to 8 weeks; this is typically done with a transvaginal ultrasound.
If your pregnancy test is positive at our center, we will schedule you for a free ultrasound.
Why Is an Ultrasound Important?
If you already know you are pregnant from a positive pregnancy test, you might be wondering, “what’s the point of an ultrasound?”
An ultrasound is important because a pregnancy test only tells you if you have the hormone hCG which is produced during pregnancy. An ultrasound reveals where this pregnancy is located, how far along you are (the gestational age) and how the pregnancy is developing.
In 2% of pregnancies, there is a chance of the egg implanting outside of the uterus, also known as an ectopic pregnancy. This is not a viable pregnancy and requires immediate medical attention to prevent complications from occurring.
It is also possible to receive a positive pregnancy test result despite having a miscarriage due to the elevated hormone levels. Having an ultrasound confirms there is a fetal heartbeat and that the pregnancy is developing.
