You have taken the pregnancy test, seen the result, and now there is one conversation you cannot stop thinking about.
You may be worried that your partner will be angry, or that he will pressure you to decide before you are ready, or perhaps you are completely unsure how he will react. These are all valid concerns.
Before you start planning the conversation, take a step back. Understanding what you are afraid of, learning more about your pregnancy, and thinking about what you want can help you approach the situation with more clarity.
Carolina Pregnancy Center provides free pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds (if eligible) for women facing unplanned pregnancies. You can also seek confidential support from us to discuss your concerns.
You do not have to navigate this uncertainty on your own. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
Understand What You’re Afraid Of
Being nervous about telling your partner you are pregnant does not necessarily mean you expect the worst from him. Sometimes, you simply have no idea how someone will respond to news that could change both of your lives.
Think about what is making the conversation feel so difficult. Are you worried he will be disappointed? Are you afraid he will insist that you continue the pregnancy or have an abortion?
There is also an important difference between being nervous about someone’s reaction and being afraid of what they might do.
If you believe your partner could threaten you or intimidate you, then you do not have to put yourself in an unsafe situation simply to tell him about the pregnancy. Consider speaking with someone you trust first and think carefully about what setting, if any, would be safe for that conversation.
You can also reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline if you have concerns about your safety. There is no requirement to share the news with your partner if you have safety concerns. Your well-being is always the pregnancy.
Learn More About Your Pregnancy
If you have only taken a pregnancy test so far, you may still have questions about how far along you are, where the pregnancy is developing, and whether the pregnancy is progressing.
A limited ultrasound can provide this additional information about your pregnancy. It can also help identify concerns such as an ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus and requires medical evaluation.
Getting these details can give you a clearer picture before you start making decisions or discussing them with your partner.
You can also take time to learn about the different paths available to you. Parenting, adoption, and abortion each involve different considerations, and you may have questions about what each could mean for your future.
Gathering information can help you separate what you think and feel from what you are worried someone else will tell you to do.
For example, you may be nervous about parenting, but there are lots of support and resources, such as material assistance and mentoring, that can make this journey feel more manageable.
His Reaction Does Not Have to Become Your Decision
Your partner may have strong feelings when you tell him you are pregnant. He may be excited, worried, confused, or have an immediate opinion about what you should do.
You can listen to what he has to say without having to decide on the spot.
If you are still figuring things out, you can be honest about that. You might tell him that you are pregnant and that you need some time to process the news before deciding what comes next.
His perspective may be important to you, particularly if you are considering your future together. But there is a difference between hearing someone’s perspective and feeling forced to follow it.
