Becoming a father is a life-changing experience. You may be struggling to form an instant connection with your newborn, or perhaps the pregnancy was unexpected, and you are wondering how you can show up as a supportive father.
These questions are common for new fathers, and the good news is that bonding with a newborn develops through small, daily, and consistent interactions.
Carolina Pregnancy Center is here to support expectant mothers and fathers. We offer new fathers a safe place to ask questions, along with parenting classes and life skills workshops, so that you can feel fully prepared as a new dad.

Here are a few practical newborn bonding tips.
Use Skin-to-Skin Contact
One of the simplest but most powerful ways to build a connection with your newborn is through skin-to-skin contact. Holding your baby against your bare chest allows them to become familiar with your scent, touch, and voice.
Research has found that frequent skin-to-skin contact between fathers and newborns can strengthen father-infant bonding.
When you comfort them by talking, singing, or gently soothing them, they get to know you. These small interactions may not seem like much, but over time, they can help you feel more connected and confident as a new father.
Get Involved in Everyday Tasks
Bonding with your newborn is built into everyday care. Getting involved in daily tasks such as changing diapers, feeding your baby, bathing, and helping with sleep routines helps you understand your baby’s needs.
It’s okay if you don’t feel confident straight away; many fathers learn through experience and grow more comfortable over time.
During our new parenting classes at Carolina Pregnancy Center, we provide hands-on experience with newborn care, where you learn about practical tasks such as changing diapers, understanding development milestones, and positive discipline.
Give Yourself Time
Every father-child relationship develops differently. Do not feel frustrated if you do not have an immediate and automatic bond to your baby. You may need more time to form a connection, and this is okay. Try not to compare your experience to other dads.
What matters most is that you continue to show up, be present, and demonstrate love for your child through consistent daily actions.
Our Dad-to-Dad Program at Carolina Pregnancy Center
At Carolina Pregnancy Center, we offer a Dad-to-Dad program that pairs you with an experienced fatherhood mentor. During this program, you can ask questions, gain wisdom, and have someone to lean on who has been through a similar experience.
We also provide free pregnancy services along with support, such as pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds for your partner. We are here for both of you throughout this journey, every step of the way.
