Knowing when to take a pregnancy test can feel confusing.  Whether you’re noticing possible symptoms or just have a hunch, knowing when to take a test can play a critical role in getting reliable results.

Understanding the Basics

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which the body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. This hormone isn’t present immediately after conception, so testing too early can lead to inaccurate results.

Most home pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to detect hCG around the time of your missed period—waiting at least a day or two after your period was supposed to arrive is recommended. For the most accurate results, take the test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.

Still Unsure?

If you test early and receive a negative result, take a step back. Your body may not have produced enough hCG yet. If your period doesn’t start in the next few days, consider taking another test. And if your cycles are irregular, try waiting at least three weeks after unprotected sex before testing.

We understand the anxiety that can come with waiting. That’s why we offer lab-quality pregnancy tests to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

I Have a Positive Test. What Now?

Seeing two pink lines or a plus sign can bring up a lot of feelings. You might be excited, nervous, or overwhelmed. Regardless of how you’re feeling, it’s important to get more information.

After a positive test at Carolina Pregnancy Center, you’ll be offered a non-diagnostic ultrasound on a limited basis to confirm that the pregnancy is progressing, determine how far along you are, and identify where it is located.

We’re here to help you navigate your next steps, all at no cost.
