How Does an Abortion End Your Pregnancy?
There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical. They both work in different ways to terminate a pregnancy.
1. Medical Abortion
Also known as the abortion pill, a medical abortion ends a pregnancy using drugs. Most commonly, it consists of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue, causing the pregnancy to end.
Hours or days later, misoprostol triggers uterine contractions, which lead to abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding to expel the pregnancy and related tissue. Once complete, the uterus should be empty, and the pregnancy will be over.
You should be aware of the risks and side effects of a medical abortion.
2. Surgical Abortion
One type of surgical abortion is a dilation and curettage abortion (D&C).
In this procedure, an abortion provider uses surgical tools or drugs to dilate (open) the cervix. Then, the abortion provider will remove the pregnancy and related tissue using a mixture of suction and scraping with surgical tools, such as a curette.
The risks of a surgical abortion include perforation of the uterus, scar tissue on the uterine wall, damage to the cervix, and infection.
