How Does A Pregnancy Test Work?

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins to produce the human pregnancy hormone known as hCG. The production of this hormone starts right after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. A pregnancy test measures the amount of hCG in your urine.

When To Take A Pregnancy Test

Your body begins producing hCG usually six days after fertilization. The levels rise quickly, doubling every 2 to 3 days. This is why it is important to wait a few days after your missed period to take the test. If you take it too early, you may get a false negative result because the level of hCG hormone hasn’t increased enough to be detected.

If your menstrual cycle is regular (generally every 28-30 days), you can usually take a pregnancy test a couple of days after your missed period. If your cycle is irregular, we suggest waiting at least 5 to 7 days after your period should have started.
