How a Pregnancy Ultrasound Works
Ultrasound is a straightforward way to learn more about your pregnancy. Here’s what typically happens:
Transducer Placement
A trained nurse or sonographer uses a small device called a transducer to capture images using sound waves.
Depending on how far along you are, the following will happen:
- Early pregnancy: A transvaginal ultrasound may be used to get the clearest images. This involves gently inserting a wand-like device into the vagina.
- Later pregnancy: The transducer may be moved gently across your abdomen.
Real-Time Images
As the scan takes place, you’ll be able to see images on the screen. The medical professional will explain what is being viewed and answer any questions you have.
Medical Review
A doctor will later review the ultrasound images and confirm the findings.
What Your Ultrasound Can Reveal
A pregnancy test can only offer an initial result, and it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know. Ultrasound provides essential details such as:
1. Pregnancy Viability
The scan can show:
- Whether the pregnancy is developing
- Whether cardiac activity is present
This is important to know, as up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. If this occurs, you may need medical follow-up to prevent long-term complications.
2. Gestational Age
Ultrasound can estimate how far along you are. This information helps you understand:
- Your pregnancy options (for example, medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation)
- What follow-up care you may need
3. Pregnancy Location
Ultrasound confirms the pregnancy is inside the uterus.
If a pregnancy grows outside the uterus, called an ectopic pregnancy, it requires immediate medical attention. An ectopic pregnancy cannot survive, and it can cause life-threatening medical issues if not treated promptly.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
Your visit will be simple and comfortable. Here are a few things that may help:
- You may be asked to come with a full bladder, which helps create clearer images.
- Wearing a two-piece outfit can make the scan easier for you.
- The team will explain each step before starting, so you know exactly what to expect.
Your comfort matters, and you are welcome to ask questions at any time.
