Think you might be pregnant? Pregnancy testing is the first step to finding out.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Implantation typically occurs 6-10 days after ovulation, and hCG levels increase rapidly during early pregnancy.

There are two main types of pregnancy tests, and both methods are highly accurate when used correctly.

Urine Tests

Most over-the-counter pregnancy tests fall into this category. They use a test strip that reacts to hCG in your urine. These are easy to use at home and provide results within minutes.

Blood Tests

Performed at a healthcare provider’s office, blood tests detect hCG at lower levels than urine tests, making them more sensitive for early detection. Results usually take longer.

When’s the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?

Timing is critical for accurate results. Here are some guidelines:

  • After a Missed Period: The best time to take a pregnancy test is on or after the first day of your missed period. By this time, hCG levels are typically high enough to be detected by most home tests.
  • First Thing in the Morning: Morning urine is more concentrated, which increases the likelihood of detecting hCG if you are pregnant.
  • The Right Day: If you test before a missed period, use a sensitive early-detection test and follow the instructions carefully. Keep in mind that testing too early may result in a false negative, as hCG levels may not yet be detectable.

What If the Result Is Positive?

A positive test is an essential first step, but confirmation is key. Scheduling an ultrasound to verify the pregnancy, determine its location, and establish gestational age. This information ensures you have all the details to make informed decisions about your next steps.
